As schools become increasingly digital, students are learning how to use apps and extensions to make content accessible and manage executive functioning deficits. These tools help students gain independence and are invaluable. However, what happens when students leave our schools and go on to the workforce or post-secondary education? Which tools do they still have access to, and which are no longer applicable? This session will explore the features of devices, apps, and extensions that are frequently used in the school environment and discuss how those features may or may not be available to students once they leave the school. Executive functioning, simply stated, includes the skills needed to get ourselves together to do what we need to do. This session will focus on what executive functioning is and how the demands on executive functioning change throughout a student's school career. This session will address the development of executive functioning skills, common supports available at each age/grade level, and what those supports look like as students transition out of the school system. Built-in and natural supports will be discussed, and participants will be encouraged to reflect on how the decrease of these supports affect students as they progress through school and as they transition. Participants will learn about both low and high-tech tools that support executive functioning and how these tools may be adjusted or progress throughout a student's experience. The process of feature matching will be discussed as participants learn about multiple tools to support each area of executive functioning deficit, with attention paid to consideration of which tools and strategies may be most impactful for students long-term.

Inclusive Classroom Conference- Executive Functioning and Behavior- The Untold Story
As the learning environment continues to change, students who struggle with executive functioning are continuing to need support in the areas of time management, organization, attention, and more. When these students do not have the support they need, feelings of overwhelm, anxiety, confusion, and negative self-image, can become the prominent reaction when thinking about school and learning. This session will take a look at the functions of behavior and tell the story of how struggles with executive functioning can result in behaviors that cause lost instructional time and negative social interactions at school. We will then look at some quick-win strategies to support these students so they can once again enjoy the experience of being in the classroom.

Council for Exceptional Children 2022- Using Technology to Support Students Who Struggle with Emotions and Behaviors
Virtual:
Come learn about behavior and how you can utilize high- and low-tech tools to support students who are struggling with unexpected behaviors in your classroom. Learn how to identify the function of student behavior and how to monitor and track concrete data. Identify methods for keeping your classroom to stay on task when behaviors interrupt the scheduled activities.
