What is Assistive Technology?
Assistive Technology (AT) includes both devices and services that help people with disabilities increase or maintain independence. This can include high-tech devices as well as low/no-tech tools.
These tools can be self-selected or can be selected through support by family, caregivers, or specialists.

What is an AT Assessment?
You may have reached this point because you have received a referral for an Assistive Technology Assessment or other Assistive Technology Services. You likely have questions. We are here to help!
If you or a loved one has a disability and is struggling to do something at work, home, or in the community, an assistive technology assessment may help determine what types of tools would allow you to do that task more easily.
The goal of assistive technology is to increase or maintain functional independence.
Our goal is to help you find the assistive technology tools that work for you.
FAQs

It does not! While the term assistive technology immediately conjures up images of high-tech things like computers, AT also includes low-tech or even non-tech items like pencil grips, magnifiers, and kitchen tools!
-
We do not sell assistive technology equipment. Our job is to explore the vast world of AT tools and know what is available so we can help you identify what will work best for you. We are happy to help find, order, and set up tools on your behalf, but we do not directly sell the tools ourselves. This allows us to pull resources from the widest variety of places- we are not trying to sell our own products or anyone else’s!

This depends on the situation. In some cases, we work with people who come directly to us and are paying for the tools themselves.
In other cases, we work with individuals who come to us through the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation or a Medicaid funded care management organization. In these cases, DVR or the organization will frequently pay for the individual’s AT supports.
There are also programs that help pay for specific types of assistive technology, such as for telephone use.
If you come to us, we are happy to help you look for funding options.

Absolutely! There are many tools that are readily available, especially if you are considering technology for a phone or tablet. Knowing what you like and do not like is a great starting point. And some people will quickly find exactly what they are looking for.
However, there are so many tools out there, that it can be very difficult to know what is all available and what you are looking for. When you add in the cost of many of these tools, it can be very daunting and expensive to simply try things on your own.
That is where we come in. We make it our job to learn about and know what is currently available. In fact, we spend many hours, days, and weeks throughout the year devoted just to learning about what tools exist and testing the limits of every day technology so we can be ready to help our clients find exactly what they need.
When you pair that with the fact that we have many of these tools available in our library to trial, or can support you in finding a trial device, we can often save you significant time and money by completing an AT assessment and assisting you in finding the right tool(s).
